Valley View to name longtime administrator as superintendent

Jun. 15—ARCHBALD — A longtime Valley View School District administrator is slated to lead the district.

Board members discussed naming Brian Durkin the district's next superintendent at their work session meeting Wednesday. They will vote on his appointment at Monday's meeting.

Durkin, 51, the district's director of leadership and school operations, will earn an annual salary of $125,000 and start Aug. 26.

A 1990 Valley View graduate, Durkin has worked in the district since 2007, serving as a principal and assistant principal at Valley View Middle, Intermediate and High schools. He started his current position in 2022. The Archbald resident holds a bachelor's degree from Marywood University, two master's degrees from Marywood and Wilkes University and a superintendent eligibility letter from Marywood. He has two children, Paige, 25, and Brian, 22, who also graduated from Valley View.

"I'm excited to carry on the tradition of educational and athletic excellence here at Valley View," Durkin said after the meeting.

He hopes to keep the district financially sound and bring new programs.

Durkin succeeds Superintendent Michael Boccella, Ed.D., who is leaving the district in August for a job in the private sector.

Boccella congratulated Durkin at Wednesday's meeting.

"I wish you all the best," Boccella told him.

Durkin is the district's fifth superintendent in the last decade.

The board also discussed:

The $40.3 million budget, with no tax increase. The millage rate will stay at 129.79.

Naming Sarah Rinaldi as coach for the district's newly formed drill team, majorettes and Mr./Ms. Cougar. The board agreed to allow administrators to establish the program in October.

The board will vote Monday on both agenda items.
