The Vampire Diaries boss Julie Plec's new series The Girls on the Bus has confirmed a release date, and has also been given a first look.

The new series, which is set to star Supergirl's Melissa Benoist, is based on a chapter in 2018 memoir Chasing Hillary about author Amy Chozick's time covering the 2016 Hillary Clinton presidential campaign.

It has now been confirmed that the series will debut with two episodes on Max on March 14, while some first-look stills have also been unveiled.

They include Benoist in character as Sadie McCarthy, "a journalist who romanticizes the original Boys on the Bus and who scrapped her whole life for her own shot at covering a presidential campaign for the paper of record".

The story follows Sadie as she bonds with three female peers on the trail, with the stills also showing fellow stars Christina Elmore, Natasha Benham and Carla Gugino in character.

The story's synopsis adds: “Despite their differences, these women become a found family with a front-row seat to the greatest soap opera in town: the battle for the White House.”

Plec has co-created the series with original author Chozick, while the show is set to air on Max after originally landing at Netflix and then The CW.

As well as The Vampire Diaries, Plec created spin-offs The Originals and Legacies, and in recent years co-created the short-lived series Vampire Academy.

The Girls on the Bus will premiere on Max in the US on March 14, and will follow with weekly episodes.
