Van der Wiel out at Toronto FC after reported spat

Toronto FC will part ways with defender Gregory van der Wiel after he reportedly got into an altercation with coach Greg Vanney.

The incident occurred Wednesday at the club's training camp in Irvine, Calif., multiple media outlets reported, and it prompted the team to send van der Wiel home.

A club spokesperson issued a statement that read, "Gregory is a good player but not the right fit. We are working with he and his agent to explore opportunities both in and outside of MLS."

Van der Wiel confirmed his exit Wednesday night on Instagram, writing, "Year one had ups and downs but I found my joy back and I could not wait to get started this new season. I was ready to give it all. Unfortunately year two will never come due to differences with the coaching staff. I just want to win and do that no matter what the consequences are. I guess that mentality was a little too much for them and they decided they do not need me for this season."

Van der Wiel, who turns 31 in February, spent one season in Toronto, playing 27 games (25 starts) and producing no goals and four assists. He made a guaranteed $835,000 in 2018, according to ESPN.com.

He previously played for Ajax in his hometown of Amsterdam, Netherlands, as well as Paris Saint-Germain, Fenerbahce (Turkey) and Cagliari (Italy).

Van der Wiel has appeared in 46 games for the Netherlands national team, and he was part of the Dutch team that reached the final of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa before losing to Spain. However, he has not played for his country since 2015.
