Van Jones is in for a shocker in this week’s upcoming episode of Finding Your Roots, finding out that he has ancestors that were freed before slavery ended.

In the episode, Henry Louis Gates, Jr. shares documents with ones that reveal that his ancestors were living as free people– 13 years before the Emancipation Proclamation.

One of his ancestors, Mark Kirkendal, was listed on the 1850 Census for Douglas Township, Arkansas, living with his wife and children

“I’m glad to hear that,” said Jones, who upon learning the information, initially asking Gates if his ancestors were listed on the census because they were white. “I’m having a hard time even getting my head there. It didn’t even occur to that would be a possibility.”
