Many rejoiced following former President Donald Trump’s arrest in New York on Tuesday, but one political commentator was not happy.

According to the New York Post, CNN political commentator Van Jones shared he didn’t “take joy” in the outcome of Trump’s arraignment.

“He looks sad,” Jones said during the network’s live coverage of the arraignment. Jones added, “He looks like the weight of it is hitting him.”

Though the former Obama administration official typically favors Democratic ideologies over Republican ones, he expressed Tuesday’s history-making criminal indictment of a former president is not something to happy about.

“Just as a human being, I don’t take joy [in Trump’s indictment],” he said.

Jones, a prison reform advocate who worked with the Trump administration to pass the First Step Act, also noted he doesn’t “like the prison system” and “what it does to people.”

The CNN correspondent’s opinion on Trump’s fate is not popular; after a clip of Jones’ commentary made its way to Twitter, users were quick to come for him.

“We may not be able to count on Twitter working, but we can always count on Van Jones being a damn clown,” one user wrote.

“Now Trump is Pop-Pop. I can’t,” another added, referring to Jones calling the former president a “granddad having a very bad day.”

One tweeter called Van Jones “unserious.”

And another mentioned Jones’ relationship with the Trumps.

“‘When the character of a person is not clear, look at their friends.’ Old proverb,” they shared.

Jones’ sympathy for Trump isn’t anything new. He caught flack for praising the former president after he signed the First Step Act.

During a 2021 appearance on The View, co-hosts Sunny Hostin, Ana Navarro and Joy Behar condemned the 54-year-old for his Trump association, which included taking selfies with controversial conservative commentator Candace Owens, who once called Trump “the savior” of the free world.
