Vance Co. Schools announces leadership changes

Sep. 21—HENDERSON — Vance County Schools recently announced several leadership changes

John Suther was named chief finance officer. He has served as the assistant finance officer for Vance County Schools for the past eight years. Suther has 17 years of experience in accounting. In 2016 he was certified by the N.C. Association of School Business Management Academy as a certified school business director. He earned his degree from N.C. State University. Suther resides in Henderson with his wife Joy and their two children.

Current Vance County Schools Payroll Supervisor Cathy Kidd will move into the assistant finance officer position. Kidd has worked over 25 years in finance, with 19 of those years in public education. She resides in Weldon with her daughter, who is currently a student at UNC Chapel Hill.

Current Chief Finance Officer Jennifer Bennett is taking a position with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Suther and Kidd will both begin their new positions effective Oct. 15, 2021.

Dr. Jennifer Carraway, the current director of student services, has been named the executive director of human resources. Carraway has been with Vance County Schools for four years. Carraway has been in the education field for 27 years. She is a graduate of Barton College and earned her master's and doctorate from N.C. State. She resides in Henderson with her husband and two children and is a proud alumnus of Vance County Schools. Carraway will begin her new position effective immediately.

Detrius Jones serves as the new assistant director of human resources. She has 13 years of experience in licensure and human resources. She lives in Raleigh with her two children and began her position in August.

Cyrus Waters was named principal of AdVance Academy. Waters has been in the education field since 2003. Waters has served as a career and technical education teacher, special populations coordinator, assistant principal, and principal at Gaston Middle School in Northampton County. Waters is a graduate of Shaw University and also earned two graduate degrees, one from Gardner Webb University and the other from Andersonville Theological Seminary. Waters will begin following the upcoming retirement of Interim Principal Mark Lawhorne.
