The Vancouver Canucks announced the acquisition of forward Tyler Toffoli from the Los Angeles Kings, then immediately gave clarity as to why the trade was made a week before the Feb. 24 trade deadline.

Canucks’ general manager Jim Benning told media on Tuesday that forward Brock Boeser has suffered a rib cartilage fracture and will be sidelined at least eight weeks, and potentially the rest of the season.

The forward, who has found a home next to star Elias Pettersson, will surely be missed as the Canucks attempt to make the postseason for the first time since 2015. Boeser has 16 goals and 45 points through 56 games this season.

Not only will Vancouver be without their top-six winger, but forward Micheal Ferland has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with concussion-like symptoms.

The bruising power forward suffered an injury early this season and made a brief two-game return in December before another injury derailed his campaign yet again. The 27-year-old has been able to lace up in only 14 games since signing with the Canucks last year.

Ferland most recently was dealing with issues regarding his peripheral vision, as part of his concussion symptoms.
