Vanderbilt football lands Bryan Longwell, a Lipscomb Academy linebacker

Lipscomb Academy all-state linebacker Bryan Longwell has found his college destination. And it's just down the street.

Longwell, a 6-foot-1, 225-pound senior, announced his commitment to Vanderbilt on Sunday. Longwell was a key part of the Mustangs' defense the past two Division II-AA state championship teams. He was part of a linebacker group that included Edwin Spillman, who also was an all-state linebacker.

Longwell had 94 total tackles this past season. He had 4 ½ sacks with 19 tackles for loss. Longwell also had two interceptions, returning both for touchdowns.

Longwell is a three-star linebacker and No. 41 player in the state.

Longwell will join teammate Junior Sherrill, a wide receiver, as a Vanderbilt signee. Sherrill signed in December. CPA's London Humphreys also signed with the Commodores in December.

Longwell has two other teammates who have signed with SEC schools in quarterback Hank Brown (Auburn), wide receiver Nate Spillman (Tennessee) and offensive lineman Brandon Solis (Missouri).

Lipscomb Academy defeated CPA 42-0 this season to win the DII-AA state championship and finish an undefeated season. It marked the last game for former coach Trent Dilfer, who resigned afterward to be the UAB football coach. Former Tennessee Titan Kevin Mawae, a Pro Football Hall of Famer, was named the Mustangs' coach this past week.
