Vanderbilt football running back Ray Davis entering transfer portal

Vanderbilt football running back Ray Davis is entering the transfer portal as a graduate transfer, he said Sunday on Twitter. Davis is graduating in December and has two years of eligibility. On Twitter, Davis said the decision was made after "conversations with my family and support group."

Davis started all 12 games for the Commodores in 2022. His 1,042 yards are ninth all-time in a single season for Vanderbilt. He rushed for five touchdowns and caught 29 passes for 169 yards and three touchdowns. He transferred from Temple prior to the 2021 season but played just three games that year due to injury.

With Davis gone, Vanderbilt will be thin at running back. The Commodores return scholarship running backs Patrick Smith and Chase Gillespie and walk-on Cooper Lutz, as well as Dylan Betts-Pauley, who did not make an appearance in 2022. Just one running back, Sedrick Alexander, is committed in Vanderbilt's 2023 recruiting class.
