Vanessa Hudgens to honor Filipino heritage in new travel documentary

Vanessa Hudgens is slated to shoot a travel documentary in the Philippines, the home of her mother, Gina Hudgens.

The untitled project, which will start filming in Manila and Palawan province later this month, will showcase the "High School Musical" actor's exploration of her Filipino heritage, including her relationship with her family and her journey as a Filipino American celebrity.

“I feel like ours is such a relatable story to so many women all over the world,” the "Bad Boys for Life" star said in a statement. “The more that we can share, the more we can lift each other up.”

Hudgens, 34, has previously expressed wanting to develop a movie about her mother’s immigrant experience. Gina, a producer and actor herself, immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 25.

Paul Soriano, who helmed Manny Pacquiao’s 2015 biopic “Kid Kulafu,” is attached as director, producer and executive producer of the new documentary.

“We are honored to work with Vanessa for this film project,” Soriano said in a statement. "It’s inspiring to note that with everything she has achieved in life, she wants to discover her Filipino roots and pay homage to her mother’s country. Hopefully, this opens doors for many more collaborations to come."

Hudgens, who co-hosted this year’s Oscars pre-show, executive produced and starred in Netflix's “The Knight Before Christmas” and led all three installments of “The Princess Switch” franchise. She most recently starred in Lin-Manuel Miranda's “Tick, Tick… Boom!” and is slated to star in the upcoming indie comedy “French Girl” alongside Zach Braff.
