I’ve Lived in New York My Whole Life and These Are the Only Coats That Keep Me Warm

If there's one thing that's remained consistent throughout my life, it's the fact that I'm always — always! — cold. I'm the type of person who carries around a sweater at all times during the summer and keeps an emergency layer at her office desk. (My list of worst fears includes being stuck shivering somewhere!) And, considering I've lived in New York my whole life, I definitely know a thing or two about the importance of a warm winter coat.

However, trying to find a women's coat that actually blocks the wind and keeps you feeling nice and toasty is, well, a task. There are a ton of options that seem to put appearance first, and while I'll always appreciate a cute look, I know it's possible to be both practical and fashion-forward.

After years of putting outerwear to the test (like, on my actual body), I've found there are seven styles that have never failed me. Ahead, I'm rounding up the warmest winter coats for women, taking into account different prices, occasions, and temperatures.

I know, I know — seemingly everyone who lives in a colder climate owns a Canada Goose coat. But, there's a reason! They live up to their reputation, and my parka definitely keeps me warm when the temperature dips below freezing. I won't lie and say they're not an investment (I personally asked for mine as a Christmas gift from my family), but if you're thinking about taking the plunge, you likely won't regret it.

Vans Galactic Spiral Metallic Jacket

I personally prefer a coat or jacket with standout details, and this silver Vans option checks that box. It also happens to be extremely warm, and earlier this year, I considered it my go-to. I always receive compliments on it, and even opted to wear it to Fashion Week in February. Another bonus? It'll set you back just $50 — a steal for a warm winter coat.

Another coat that really lives up to the hype, if you ask me. I actually discovered how warm the famous Amazon Coat was during an InStyle photo shoot. After having it on for less than 10 minutes (with a very thin top underneath), I could feel myself sweating. I knew then and there it would hold up against 40-degree days — and, thankfully, I was right. The best part is, it comes in so many colors and sizes, ranging from XXS to 5X.

Perhaps I was subconsciously channeling Princess Diana, but one year, I vividly remembering wanting a red coat. After being tempted by a J.Crew sale, I purchased a high-neck option on the site, and instantly became a fan of the brand's outerwear. Pretty much every option the store sells comes in a variety of vibrant colors, and at 5'0, I especially love that you can shop petite sizing. I should also note that yes, this baby got me through all my holiday gatherings. While warm, it's also sleek and elegant enough to pair with a fancy party outfit.

I.AM.GIA. Stefani Coat

I will preface this by saying you won't want to wear this one on particularly biting days, but if you're hoping to spice up your look when it's 55 degrees outside? By all means, this leopard coat is for you. The animal print is timeless and classic, while also adding a fun, eye-catching element to whatever you're wearing. While I bought this coat a few years ago, I still enjoy styling it with everything from jeans to dresses.

The North Face Metropolis III Hooded Water Resistant Down Parka

Growing up on Staten Island, having a coat from The North Face meant you were cool (and if you paired it with a monogrammed Coach baguette bag, you were even cooler). While the comeback of these puffers definitely threw me for a loop, I have to say they are reliable. Aside from the current stellar reviews, I used to wear my own black version while literally rolling in the snow with my high school crush — and somehow, managed to go on with my day without freezing or getting sick. If that's not considered warmth, I don't know what is.

Isabel Marant Etoile Black & White Ojima Coat

Sadly, my all-time favorite coat is a vintage Etsy find, but I'll tell you the exact term I used in my search bar: mohair. While this wool blend fabric is no doubt warm, it also gives off a cute fuzzy look — and feels especially fancy and retro when combined with a print. If you're looking for something new, I've found a similar option from Isabel Marant. If not, there are plenty of high-quality secondhand choices out there, which I highly recommend, as it's unlikely you'll spot anyone with the same coat!
