Vecchione’s 2 goals propel Bears past Phantoms, extend win streak

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (WHTM) – The Hershey Bears extended their win streak to six games on Wednesday night after downing the Lehigh Valley Phantoms 4-2 behind two Mike Vecchione goals.

The Bears roared back from a 2-1 deficit in the final period to keep their winning streak alive.

Vecchione opened scoring on a power play in the first period and the Phantoms answered at 11:03 in the second period to tie the game. Lehigh Valley netted another one at 12:25 to take the lead, 2-1.

Jimmy Huntington evened the game for Hershey less than two minutes into the third period for his 11th goal of the season.

Vecchione put the Bears in the lead with his second goal of the game later in the third period, winning a 2-on-1 battle after taking a pass from Pierrick Dube. The two goals not only put the Bears ahead but marked Vecchione’s first game of the season with multiple goals.

Dube wrapped up the game with an empty-net goal.

Goaltender Clay Stevenson earned his 16th win of the season with the victory, going 25-for-27.

The shots ended in favor of the Bears, 31-27, who also won the power play battle, going 1-for-4 with the man advantage while the Phantoms went 0-for-5.

The game marked a milestone for Aaron Ness, who was skating in his 700th career AHL game. Ness was tabbed a secondary helper on Vecchione’s second goal.

The Hershey Bears will try to extend their win streak to seven on Friday when they face Lehigh Valley again at the PPL Center. The Bears return home on Saturday when they host the Bridgeport Islanders.

The Bears are currently first in the AHL with a 35-7 record.
