Patrick Mahomes had a rare off-night against the Bills last week, a thread that started to unwind on the Chiefs’ opening drive of the game when he missed Travis Kelce. He never quite found a rhythm in a game eventually played in the rain.

This could be a good time for a trip to the nation’s capital.

The Chiefs are favored by 6 1/2 points Sunday against the Washington Football Team, which has the 31st-ranked defense in the NFL. The only unit worse, of course, is the Chiefs themselves.

Which means Washington represents an ideal opponent for Mahomes and his group. The team is allowing 293.4 passing yards per game. (The Chiefs are at 296.4.)

Put together, it should come as no surprise that the matchup has the biggest over/under line of the week at 54 1/2 points. Of note here: Four of five Chiefs games this season have hit the over, and four of five Washington games have, too.

The Chiefs are just 1-4 against the spread this season — they were favored last week but lost to the Bills. This comes after they finished 1-7 against the spread in the back half of the 2020 season.

The Chiefs are one of five NFL teams that has covered the line only one time this season — but the Washington Football team is another. The Jets, 49ers and Jaguars are also just 1-4 against the spread. By contrast, the Cowboys remain a perfect 5-0 against the spread.
