Vegetation fire breaks out near homes, shopping centers in Riverside County

Firefighters are battling a brushfire that broke out Friday evening near homes and other buildings in Jurupa Valley, Riverside County fire officials said Saturday.

The fire was reported around 5:50 p.m. near Limonite Avenue and El Palomino Drive, south of Indian Hills Golf Club.

As of 8:52 a.m. Saturday, the fire had burned five acres and was 70% contained, Cal Fire and the Riverside County Fire Department tweeted.

On Friday night, the fire burned in a river bottom and spread to a nearby Rite Aid pharmacy, where "firefighters held it to the roof of the structure," according to the department.

Footage from KABC-TV Channel 7 showed dozens of trees charred by flames adjacent to homes and busy shopping centers. Helicopters hovered overhead as smoke wafted over the homes and businesses.

About 50 fire engines and more than 230 firefighters were battling the blaze, the Fire Department said. Firefighting aircraft that were dispatched earlier in the evening had been released by Friday night.

One firefighter and one civilian suffered minor injuries, and both were transported for medical attention, fire officials said.
