Vehicle crashes into Hazleton strip mall

Mar. 15—A sport utility vehicle crashed into the back of a strip mall in Hazleton on Monday morning.

The crash was reported around 9:30 a.m. and happened on Vine Street, near West 21st Street, to the rear of Sharkey Law Office and a restaurant, Brother Bruno.

Hazleton police are investigating but it appeared the driver of a red Toyota Rav 4 busted through a fence behind the building, taking down about 50 feet of the fence.

Hazleton Fire Chief Donald Leshko said the building will be inspected for structural damage. He said UGI was asked to respond and check for additional damage after a gas line was ruptured. The gas was turned off after the damage was found, he said.

The driver was being checked by an ambulance crew but no one inside the building reported injury, Leshko said.
