Vehicle tumbles off Blue Ridge Parkway, kills Waynesboro man who was a passenger

WAYNESBORO — Authorities said a Waynesboro man was killed Saturday evening after a vehicle tumbled off the Blue Ridge Parkway, according to a press release.

The fatal crash took place at mile post 1 shortly after 7 p.m.

The National Park Service said a vehicle headed northbound on the parkway went off the road, about 10 feet down an embankment, and then struck a tree. The vehicle flipped several times before landing on the passenger side.

A passenger, Brayan Antonio Garcia Navas, 23, of Waynesboro, died at the scene.

The driver was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville with serious injuries that were not considered life-threatening, the press release said.

Virginia State Police and Wintergreen Fire and Rescue responded to the scene with rangers from the National Park Service.

The investigation is ongoing to determine if there were any other contributing factors, the National Park Service said.
