Velarde, Quinn combine on Rogues shutout

Jul. 29—Eamon Velarde's last start of the summer for the Medford Rogues was strong and the collegiate wood-bat baseball team continued an impressive late-season run with a 6-0 victory Thursday over TKB Baseball at Harry & David Field.

Velarde allowed only three hits in five shutout innings with six strikeouts and one walk, with Victor Quinn tossing two no-hit innings with five strikeouts and two walks for Medford (23-16-1).

The Rogues have allowed two runs or less in their last three games, notching double-digit strikeouts in an eighth straight contest despite Thursday's game being shortened to seven innings due to a later start brought on by extreme heat conditions here in Southern Oregon.

Medford wasted no time in jumping ahead of TKB Baseball with three runs in the first inning, using leadoff singles by Tyler Peterson and Emiliano Alarcon and a two-run double by Barron Zamora to build an early lead. An RBI single by Dane Woodcook made it 3-0 through one inning.

Another pair of singles by Peterson and Alarcon set the stage for a run in the second, with Peterson coming home on a wild pitch.

Reece MacRae plated a run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth and Zamora supplied an RBI double to cap the scoring.

Zamora went 2-for-3 with one run and three RBIs, while Peterson and Alarcon also finished with two hits.

The Rogues are set to wrap up their season-ending homestand with 7:35 p.m. starts slated Friday and Saturday nights against TKB Baseball.

Gates open at 5 p.m. Friday to accommodate a Home Run Derby planned by the Rogues at 5:30. Friday night also will feature a 10th-year anniversary jersey auction.
