UPDATE, writethru: Sony’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage chomped on a big chunk of the international box office this weekend as it swallowed a $62.3M mouthful from 44 overseas markets. This follows from the symbiote’s record-breaking Russia and Latin America starts over the past few weeks. The Tom Hardy-starrer has now cumed $115.6M overseas and $283.7M global. While dates were switched up, the current pillow between Bond and Dune has done Venom well.

With 41% of its offshore footprint released, the film captured the No. 1 spot in 39 markets and is outpacing Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings by 102%, Black Widow by 76%, No Time To Die by 34% and F9 by 17% at the same point in release in like-for-like markets.

More from Deadline

Venom 2’s debut is astounding, and set pandemic-era opening records in Spain ($3.9M) and Italy ($3.7M). Notably, Korea, which has been in the doldrums of late, let Carnage reign as the second best bow for a Hollywood title in the pandemic era with $9.5M.

Meanwhile, and not to be outdone in its third weekend at the international box office, MGM/Eon/Universal’s No Time To Die has bonded with $348.3M overseas and $447.5M global. The latter figure puts the Cary Joji Fukunaga-directed 007 installment within reach of Godzilla Vs Kong to soon become the No. 2 Hollywood movie of 2021, behind Universal’s own F9.

Daniel Craig’s final turn as the super agent added $54M from 72 combined Universal and MGM markets this session and is currently running 13% behind Spectre and 6% behind Skyfall. Australia and China are still to come.

Warner Bros/Legendary’s Dune, which extends its rollout next week, including in China where it currently leads pre-sales for the frame, added $8.5M this weekend on 5,240 screens in 36 markets. The international running cume is currently $129.3M.

Before Dune gets to China, local blockbuster The Battle At Lake Changjin added another $72M this three-day weekend, and has now grossed about $763M. Maoyan is seeing an RMB 5.43B, or $843M, finish for the propaganda pic (see our review here) which would put it above Hi, Mom as the No. 1 movie of the year worldwide. IMAX has now grossed $34.6M on the film which is its fourth biggest local-language title of all time.

In terms of how Covid continues to affect offshore markets, South East Asia is slowly coming back while Australia is now at 32% locked down which is an improvement. Restrictive measures have tightened in Russia with 36 our of 85 regions requiring a vaccination certificate or a negative test to attend cinemas.

Breakdowns on the films above and more have been updated below.

After world premiering at the Venice Film Festival, Universal/Blumhouse’s Halloween Kills kicked off its international run this weekend, grossing $5.5M from 20 markets. The UK leads play with $2.3M on 550 screens. The Jamie Lee Curtis-starrer strode to the best opening Friday for an 18-certificate film since The Gentlemen in early January 2020, and the biggest Blumhouse opening day since Glass in January 2019. For Universal horror titles, Friday was also the strongest opening day in the market since the previous Halloween debuted in October 2018.

Mexico opened at No. 2 with $1.3M, 11% below The Forever Purge and 148% over Don’t Breathe 2. Horror tends to skew more towards domestic, the previous Halloween ended its run with about 38% of box office coming from overseas. Future key markets on this pic include France, Russia, Germany, Italy and Spain next week; followed by Korea, Australia and Japan.

Sony’s sequel is having a wild ride overseas with $62.3M from 44 offshore markets this session, a 42% drop in holdovers. That lifts the international cume to $115.6M after the movie already set pandemic records in Russia and Latin America, demonstrating again that audiences are returning when the product is there . As noted above, the Tom Hardy-starrer has landed No. 1s in 39 markets and is currently outpacing pandemic releases Shang-Chi (+102%), Black Widow (+76%), No Time To Die (+34%) and F9 (+17%) at the same point in release and in like-for-like markets.

Western Europe delivered $18M for the symbiote with records in both Spain ($3.9M) and Italy ($3.7M) as the highest openings of the pandemic era. In the former, the debut was 8% above the original film. The UK launched at $8.3M, 7% ahead of Venom and the second-best standard opening of the pandemic.

The Middle East earned $6.9M. Saudi Arabia accounted for $2.1M which is Sony’s best start ever. Eastern Europe contributed $7.3M, led by Ukraine’s third best opening weekend of all time at $2.7M. Poland’s launch was 59% above Venom with $1.3M.

As a region, Asia grossed $17.8M from six markets. The opening was the highest in Taiwan ($2.8M) since cinemas resumed operations. Korea’s $9.5M start was the second best for a Hollywood title during the pandemic and is especially notable given how soft the market has been of late. India likewise gave Venom the second best start for a studio movie at $2.1M. Strong IMAX results out of Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea helped propel the global total to $12.7M.

In holds, Russia has now cumed $28.2M to make Venom 2 the biggest Hollywood movie of pandemic times. In Latin America, it retained the top slot across the region. Mexico has now grossed $16.8M and Brazil was down just 34% for a market cume of $7.2M.

The first movie did 75% of its business overseas, including a massive $269M from China. Venom 2 does not yet have a China date, but will see upcoming releases in France and Germany next session, followed by Australia and Japan in November and December.
