Drug arrest in Conejo Valley tied to trafficking
Ventura County sheriff's detectives recently arrested a Los Angeles resident suspected of trafficking drugs locally as part of an organized operation.
The 32-year-old resident of the Venice area was taken into custody Nov. 9 during a warrant search in Thousand Oaks, sheriff's officials said.
The suspect was identified during an October investigation by the sheriff's narcotics unit. Detectives learned a drug trafficking organization based in Los Angeles was allegedly distributing both bulk and personal quantities of illegal drugs in Ventura County. Substances included fentanyl, heroin, methamphetamine and counterfeit pills apparently laced with fentanyl.
The Venice resident was believed to be a delivery driver for the group. Detectives secured a search warrant for the man and his vehicle.
The warrant was served in a public parking lot in the 900 block of Academy Drive.
Detectives reportedly found more than 10 ounces of the powerful synthetic opioid fentanyl as well as 8 ounces of heroin, 638 counterfeit oxycodone pills believed to be laced with fentanyl, 3 ounces of methamphetamines, a loaded handgun and a large amount of cash.
Sheriff's officials described the the total amount of opioids seized as about 520 grams, or equivalent to about 13,000 doses. Fentanyl can be fatal when as little as .25 milligrams is ingested, officials said, noting that Ventura County has seen a spike in fentanyl overdose deaths like much of the nation.
The suspect was arrested on suspicion of various drug and firearm offenses and was later released from Ventura County jail on $80,000 bond, officials said. He is scheduled for arraignment Nov. 28.
The investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are expected, sheriff's officials said.
