Vermilion Co. man gets 10 years for bomb possession, meth dealing

DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — A man formerly from Catlin will spend the next decade in prison for dealing meth, as well as possessing explosives that helped another man bomb several places in the town in March 2020.

At the time, 61-year-old Kirk Marvel confessed to Vermilion County authorities that he supplied the bomber, Jason Boyd, with explosives. Police searched Marvel’s home and found fuses as well as 74 grams of methamphetamines, which Marvel admitted belonged to him.

He also admitted that he had been in possession of other bomb-making materials, although these materials were not located in the search. Marvel said this is because he destroyed them after Boyd’s arrest.

Danville man sentenced for repeat gun crimes: State’s Attorney

Marvel was sentenced to 10 years for the class X felony of methamphetamine delivery and four years for the class 1 felony of possession of explosive or incendiary devices. The two sentences will be served at the same time, meaning he will spend a total of 10 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. This will be followed by a year and a half of mandatory supervised release.

“These incidents of explosions around the Catlin area caused great concern for public safety. I appreciate the attentiveness of the Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department throughout this lengthy investigation,” State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacy said.

Boyd was sentenced in July 2021 to two and a half years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. He pled guilty to unlawful use of a weapon. After serving his sentence, he will have one year of mandatory supervised release.
