Vermillion cruises past Winner in Class A seventh-place game

Mar. 20—SIOUX FALLS — A slow start doomed Winner on Saturday at the Sanford Premier Center, as Vermillion defeated the Warriors, 78-49, to take seventh place at the Class A state tournament.

The Tanagers (23-2) jumped out to a 22-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, which grew to 41-18 by halftime as they shot 50 percent from the field. Meanwhile, Winner (20-5) shot 26.9 percent in the first half, with Brady Fritz being held to two points before the break.

Vermillion led by as many as 32 points in the second half, with all five starters cracking double-digits. It finished shooting 48.1 percent, including nine 3s.

Jakob Dobney, who was named to the all-tournament team, scored a team-high 20 points on 5-for-10 3-point shooting. Dillon Gestring had 18 points, while Noah Gilbertson added 13 points and eight rebounds. Connor Saunders and Jake Jensen each scored 10 points in the win.

Fritz rebounded in the second half to finish with 18 points and all-tournament honors. Blake Volmer added eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the Warriors, who held a 41-36 advantage on the glass.
