Vermont hockey, basketball: How Catamount teams fared Nov. 11-12

FRIDAY'S GAMES

Women’s hockey

Vermont 2, Boston University 1

V: Natalie Mlynkova 2G. Lily Humphrey 1A. Corinne McCool 1A. Theresa Schafzahl 1A. Sini Karjalainen 1A. Jessie McPherson 16 saves.

B: Sydney Healey 1G. Andrea Brändli 31 saves.

Note: Mlynkova's goal off a power play 1:54 into the third period lifted No. 13 Vermont (8-4-1) to the win. UVM held a 33-17 advantage in shots and won faceoffs 39-20. Schafzahl was 13-1 in faceoffs and her third period assist broke a tie with Amanda Pelkey to become UVM's all-time leader in assists. Schafzahl is now the all-time leader at UVM in goals (60), assists (57) and points (117).

Women’s basketball

Miami (Ohio) 79, Vermont 73

M: Maddi Cluse (30 points, 11 rebounds). Ivy Wolf (18 points). Amani Freeman (14 points, 6 rebounds).

V: Emma Utterback (14 points, 10 assists, 6 rebounds). Delaney Richason (13 points, 5 rebounds). Anna Olson (12 points, 6 rebounds).

Note: Vermont (0-2) started slow in the first quarter with just three made field goals, but outscored Miami 24-15 in the second quarter to pull within 11 at the break. Another strong frame in the third saw UVM shoot 56.3% from the field to cut the deficit to five. Vermont held a 23-3 advantage in bench points as sophomore Aryana Dizon added 11 and Carla Celaya supplied 10. Vermont trailed by just two in the opening minute of the fourth quarter and shot 43.8% for the game. The loss concludes the two-game road trip for the Catamounts, who will host their home opener against AIC on Tuesday at Patrick Gym. ... Sisters Delaney Richason and Katey Richason played against each other for the first time in their college careers.

Men’s hockey

Vermont 2, New Hampshire 1 (OT)

V: Will Zapernick 1G, 1A. Andrei Buyalsky 1G. Porter Schachle 1A. Dawson Good 1A. Robbie Stucker 1A. Gabe Carriere 21 saves.

NH: Morgan Winters 1G. David Fessenden 30 saves.

Note: Zapernick leveled the game 4:48 into the first period. After a pair of scoreless frames, Buyalsky struck on assists from Stucker and Zapernick to give the Catamounts the triumph at the 4:00 minute mark of OT. The Cats led shots 32-22 and faceoffs 32-20 for their first conference win of the season.

SATURDAY'S GAMES

Women’s hockey

Boston University 4, Vermont 3 (OT)

BU: Lacey Martin 2G. Madison Cardaci 1G. Julia Nearis 1G. Callie Shanahan 25 saves.

V: Theresa Schafzahl 1G. Ellice Murphy 1G. Lily Humphrey 1G, 1A. Natalie Mlynkova 3A. Jessie McPherson 17 saves.

Note: Martin scored 19 seconds into overtime as the Terriers earned a weekend split in Burlington. No. 13 UVM falls to 8-5-1 overall and 6-3-1 in Hockey East. Humphrey's goal came on the power play to give UVM a 3-2 lead with 5:50 to play in the third. But BU leveled the game 1:15 later on Cardaci's tally on a 2-on-1 chance.

Men's hockey

Vermont 2, New Hampshire 1

V: Joe Leahy 1G. Dawson Good 1G. Gabe Carriere 22 saves.

NH: Kristaps Skrastins 1G. David Fessenden 28 saves.

Note: Leahy's goal at 10:39 of the third period gave UVM a 2-0 lead, and the Catamounts held on to complete the sweep of UNH. The Catamounts improve to 4-6-1 overall and 2-6 in Hockey East. UNH falls to 3-8-1, 0-8-1.
