The matchup: Vermont women vs. Albany

The Vermont women’s basketball team is riding a 16-game win streak, good for the fifth best in the county, into the America East championship.

The league’s top-ranked team reached the title game after a fourth-quarter run against Maryland-Baltimore County led to a 75-63 on Sunday at Patrick Gym. Vermont (24-6) faces defending champion No. 2 Albany (22-10).

Vermont hasn't won the league tourney since the second of back-to-back crowns in 2010.

Vermont, led by first team all-conference selections Emma Utterback and Anna Olson, is hosting the championship game for the first time since 2001. Utterback is averaging 13.9 points per game and 4.3 assists over 35.2 minutes per contest (shooting 42% from the field). Olson, a junior, adds 11.8 ppg and a team-high 6.4 rpg over 30.2 minutes.

The Catamounts and Great Danes split the season series, with Vermont winning most recently 53-49 in Burlington on Feb. 4.

Vermont held the Great Danes to eight points in the third quarter of the Feb. 4 matchup to hold on for the home win.

Albany also boasts two all-conference first team selections in junior guard Kayla Cooper and senior forward Helene Haegerstrand (also a 2021-22 first team pick). Cooper (18 points, 10 rebounds in the second meeting against UVM) is averaging 15.2 ppg and 8.2 rpg. The 6-foot-1 Haegerstrand averages 14.6 ppg.

Albany leads the all-time series 23-5, but the Great Danes haven’t beaten Vermont at home since 2017.

The matchup: Vermont men vs. UMass Lowell

When the Catamount men visited UMass Lowell on Jan. 11, they lost 80-65 with America East's soon-to-be player of the year Finn Sullivan sidelined with an illness and freshman TJ Hurley out with an ankle injury.

The Catamounts (22-10) haven't lost since, compiling a 14-game winning streak, the third longest in coach John Becker's tenure, and seizing their seventh straight regular-season crown.

Vermont's roll includes a 93-81 decision over the RiverHawks (26-7) in the team's second meeting on Feb. 11.

The Catamounts arrive in their ninth championship game in 13 years — and their fifth time hosting since 2017 — following routs of NJIT (84-57) and Binghamton (79-57), respectively, in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds.

The River Hawks, searching for their first NCAA Tournament since transitioning from D-II to D-I a decade ago, blasted Maine 85-54 in their first playoff game before outlasting New Hampshire 75-64 in the semifinals.

Sullivan (11.8 ppg, 4.9 rpg) and Robin Duncan (7.8 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 4.5 apg) made the all-league first team for Vermont, while Dylan Penn (13.2 ppg) landed on second team and Aaron Deloney (11.7 ppg) garnered the sixth man award for the second straight season.

For Lowell, Everett Hammond (13.8 ppg) earned first-team honors, Abdoul Karim Coulibaly (11.5 ppg) was picked for second team and Allin Blunt (10.4 ppg) for third team.
