Vermont Varsity Insider: High school field hockey rankings (Oct. 5)

Our second installment of the Vermont Varsity Insider field hockey rankings look slightly different.

Essex still tops the rankings after a month of perfection, but after that parity rules the way. With exactly one month till Championship Saturday, teams will start to emerge as offenses heat up and defenses strengthen toward a playoff push.

This week's rankings (through 10/5):

1. Essex High School

Record: 6-0

Sept. 22 rankings: 1

▶ Undefeated and just one goal allowed on the year, Essex sits rightfully atop the rankings.

2. South Burlington High School

Record: 7-1-1

Sept. 22 rankings: 4

▶ Since the Sept. 10 loss to Champlain Valley, the defending champs have ripped off six straight wins, including a 2-0 triumph over the Redhawks.

3. Bellows Falls Union High School

Record: 6-0-1

Sept. 22 rankings: 3

▶ Bellows Falls are unbeaten, but not unblemished. The Terriers battle to a 0-0 tie on the road against Hartford and remain in the three slot.

4. Champlain Valley Union High School

Record: 5-2

Sept. 22 rankings: 2

▶ A 2-2 record since the last rankings (losses to Rice and South Burlington) result in a slight drop for CVU.

5. Rice Memorial High School

Record: 4-3-2

Sept. 22 rankings: 7

▶ Riding a three-game winning streak behind stellar defense the Green Knights avenged an earlier loss to CVU with a 1-0 victory. Rice is in the thick of the Metro with a handful games left in the regular season.

6. Hartford High School

Record: 7-0-1

Sept. 22 rankings: 8

▶ Finish with a draw against Bellows Falls and win against previously unbeaten Woodstock? Fighting for the Southern Vermont League A crown? That'll do for a jump in the rankings.

7. Woodstock Union High School

Record: 7-1

Sept. 22 rankings: 9

▶ The lone loss came against Hartford in a 2-1 finish. The Wasps are still at the top of Southern Vermont League B standings.

8. Colchester High School

Record: 3-4-1

Sept 22 rankings: 5

▶ Consecutive losses to Mount Mansfield, Champlain Valley and Essex result in a dive for the Lakers.

9. U-32 High School

Record: 8-1

Sept. 22: On the bubble.

▶ With just six goals conceded on the year and a recent victory over Spaulding the Raiders headline the Capital Division.

10. Spaulding High School

Record: 8-1

Sept. 22: 10

▶ U-32 snapped the Crimson Tide's unbeaten streak and grasped the division. Spaulding is set to play Lyndon later this month after beating the Vikings 4-3 earlier in the season.

Mount Abraham, Burlington, Lyndon, Otter Valley, Mount Mansfield.

South Burlington at Essex, 10 a.m. Saturday
