Vermont women's hockey: Catamounts rout Dartmouth

The University of Vermont women's hockey team avenged an overtime loss against Dartmouth last year with a thrashing triumph.

The Catamounts (11-5-1) scored in each period and raced to a 4-1 win, their third in a row by at least three goals, over the Twin State neighbor at Gutterson Fieldhouse on Tuesday night.

No. 13 UVM struck midway through the first period on Theresa Schafzahl's power-play goal. Schafzahl received a cross-ice helper from Sini Karjalainen in the attacking zone and deposited the shot top left past Big Green goalie, Maggie Emerson (27 saves).

Dartmouth (3-8) evened early in the second period on Abby Grexton's goal, but Vermont tallied a pair of scores in under a minute to seize a commanding lead with four minutes remaining in the frame. Tynka Pátková and Natalie Mlynkova positioned the Catamounts ahead with the decisive second period goals.

Karjalainen added the fourth score at the 18:16 mark of the third period. Jessie McPherson denied 18 shots for her tenth win of the season. Vermont finished with a 26-24 lead in faceoffs.

UVM has tallied 22 points in the last seven games for a 6-1 record over the stretch.

The Catamounts travel to No. 7 Northeastern on Friday for a two-game set.
