Vernon’s annual KIDSAFE Car Show set for Aug. 20

Organizers of the 11th annual KIDSAFE Car Show said all indications are that this year’s show will be the biggest yet.

Co-organizers Jerry Bundy and Robin Kohler said that last year’s total of 250 cars is likely to be eclipsed, based on the level of interest they’ve received so far from car owners. Interest from sponsors, spectators, and visitors has also been high.

“Every year, it seems to get bigger and bigger. We have had a lot of cars sign up,” Kohler said, “and since we’ve put the signs up in the area, we’ve had a lot more.”

While some recruiting is done at other car shows in the area, Bundy said there are so many classic car owners that it’s pretty easy to find people willing to help out the cause.

“Everybody’s got a classic car,” he joked. “We’re surrounded by antique cars in the tri-town region. Most car people are good people. The word gets out and people show up.”

A wider variety of food trucks, including Request-a-Chef, Square Peg Pizza, Kona Ice, and Jeff’s Kettle Corn, will be on-hand to quench appetites.

The presenting sponsor, Kloter Farms, has donated raffle prizes and the use of their ATV for the day. Chrome sponsor Collision Automotive Carstar, of East Hartford, is also returning for a second year. Swiss Cleaners is also providing event T-shirts for the show’s staff, and for sale at the show.

Longtime Hartford Courant auto review writer and WTIC-AM’s “The Car Doctor” Jim MacPherson will be announcing the awards, and Miss CT Teen USA Mya Xeller will also be in attendance and handing out prizes.

There will be a Kids’ Zone with arts and crafts and an inflatable slide, a DJ, and more.

“The most important thing is that everything goes toward preventing child abuse in the community,” Kohler said.

All proceeds from the show will benefit KIDSAFE CT, a nonprofit whose mission is to partner with the community to educate and empower families and promote the well-being of young people.

General admission is free for spectators. Show car registration is $10. Judging starts at noon and the awards parade will be held at 1 p.m. The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Tolland County Agricultural Center, 24 Hyde Ave., Route 30, Vernon, CT.
