Vernon phone systems are down today

Sep. 8—VERNON — Town and school phones lines other than 911 are down today after a "major system-wide failure" occurred during a routine software update, Town Administrator Michael Purcaro said this morning.

Purcaro said he was notified of the failure around 9 p.m. Tuesday, and town employees have been working since then with the town's telephone system vendors to determine and repair the issue.

"It's a temporary issue, but we do not have an estimated time of restoration at this point in time," Purcaro said about 7:30 a.m. today.

In addition to 911 for emergency calls, the town's routine emergency dispatch line at 860-872-9126 remains operational, Purcaro said, adding that, per the town's emergency telecommunications plan, a Vernon dispatcher has been transferred to the South Windsor Police Department to take calls from Vernon residents.

For other town matters, Purcaro said residents are advised to email town departments or, if there is a critical need, visit Town Hall at 14 Park Place.
