Vero Beach girls weightlifting rolls to District 13-3A championship
VERO BEACH — Vero Beach took their sixth straight girls weightlifting district championship as the District 13-3A meet on their home floor was a clean sweep of the bench press and clean-and-jerk events and the snatch.
Eight Vero Beach lifters swept both events led by reigning state champion in the unlimited division Aiyana Harrington, who put up 125 pounds on the snatch, a school-record 240 pounds on the bench press and 160 pounds on the clean-and-jerk.
Three Vero seniors and returning First Team All-Area selections all had big days as Avery Teske at 169 pounds, putting up 115 pounds on the snatch, 190 for bench press and 170 pounds for the clean-and-jerk, Grace Wilson at 139 pounds put up totals of 135 on snatch, 160 on both bench press and clean-and-jerk and Sarah Eiswerth at 110 pounds put up 130 on snatch, 140 on bench press and 165 for the clean-and-jerk.
Sydney Thompson at 101 pounds put up 85 on snatch, 100 on bench press and 110 on clean-and-jerk, Karen Martinez at 119 pounds put up 110 pounds on snatch, 115 on bench press and 135 pounds on the clean-and-jerk, Leah Perez at 129 pounds put up 115 pounds on snatch, 140 pounds on bench press and 150 pounds on the clean-and-jerk and Mollie McCain put up 110 pounds on the snatch, 135 pounds on the bench press and 155 pounds on the clean-and-jerk for Vero Beach.
Martin County's Mary Polak also had a big day, sweeping the titles at 154 pounds with 120 pounds on the snatch, 150 pounds on the bench press and 180 pounds on the clean-and-jerk for the Tigers.
Vero Beach's Malisha Durane took the title at 199 pounds in the bench press and clean-and-jerk, putting up totals of 160 and 130 pounds respectively.
The top six finishers in both events will advance to the Region 4-3A Championship, also to be held at Vero Beach High School on Jan. 29.
