Vero Beach woman killed in Melbourne two-vehicle crash

MELBOURNE —A 67-year-old Vero Beach woman was killed Saturday after a pickup truck veered into her lane, causing a head-on collision, Melbourne police said Sunday.

The accident occurred Saturday evening — police did not specify the time — at the intersection of U.S. 1 and Nelson Avenue. Police said Darrell Ramsey, 61, of Palm Bay was traveling northbound on U.S. 1 at a high rate of speed in his 2017 Nissan Titan pickup when he lost control of the vehicle and crossed lanes into the path of a 2021 Toyota RV4 sport utility vehicle driven by Patsy Ward.

Melbourne Police officers arriving on the scene found Ward critically injured. She was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead.

Ramsey was also injured in the crash, but his condition was not immediately known, nor did police say whether any arrests had been made. Investigators are looking into the possibility that alcohol was a factor, police said.
