Verona car wash employee in intensive care after being hit by car

A 41-year-old car wash employee is in surgical intensive care after he was struck by a car in front of his workplace Sunday afternoon, Verona police Chief Christopher Kiernan said.

Authorities said the employee was working on a car in the driveway of the business when a vehicle traveling east on Bloomfield Avenue left the roadway and hit him before striking two other vehicles and crashing into a utility pole. The employee was thrown 50 feet, police said.

The employee sustained "serious injuries" and the driver, a 75-year-old man, remained on scene and was later taken to the hospital with moderate injuries.

The Verona Police Department is investigating the incident and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office has been notified.
