Verona issues boil water advisory as a precaution

A boil water advisory has been instated by Verona following a water supply emergency due to a malfunction with a Passaic Water Valley Commission pump station, according to a press release put out by Verona on Wednesday afternoon. The township said the advisory is a precaution.

"There has been no confirmed contamination in the water system," the press release said. "Due to the loss of water pressure, it is standard operating procedure to instate a boil water advisory."

In a Facebook post on Verona's official page, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection is credited for recommending the advisory. The township has asked citizens to conserve water for the next 48 hours or until the issue has been resolved, which would include not using water for any non-essential purposes.

Verona stated in an earlier press release that their Office of Emergency Management, Department of Public Works, Fire Department and Police Department are working in supplying water to the township with support from mutual aid partnerships between Montclair and Cedar Grove.

Bryan Frierson, the assistant public information officer for the PWVC, said, "Passaic Valley Water Commission does not have a main break that would cause Verona to issue a boil water advisory, nor do we have authority to issue a boil water advisory on behalf of Verona."

He went on to explain that, "Passaic Valley Water Commission did have an issue at its Little Falls Pump Station this past Monday, which caused pressure issues in Little Falls, Totowa and Woodland Park. However, that was addressed and repaired within hours thanks to our staff working diligently and safely."
