Vet of the Month tribute to honor Williams

NORTH MANKATO — American Legion Post 518 will fly a flag in November in honor of Army Spc. 4 John Howard Williams.
At 10 a.m. Saturday, members will gather at Wheeler Park in lower North Mankato to begin the monthlong tribute.
Williams was born July 4, 1947, to Howard and Loris Williams. He attended Lamberton High School and studied auto mechanics.
His military service began when he joined the Army in 1968. He served with C Company, 7th Engineer Battalion, 5th Army Division. as a demolitions specialist and in 1969 was deployed to Vietnam with his unit.
He was awarded a National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star and a Vietnam campaign medal. In 1970, he was transferred to the U.S. Army Reserve.
Williams died Aug. 4, 1972, in St. Peter. He is buried at Minneopa Cemetery in Mankato.
