Veterans appreciation meal feeds hundreds for Independence Day

Jul. 7—After marching in the Fourth of July Parade, Jasper County veterans marched double time back to the American Legion Post 111 for some chow. For the past several years, the Post has celebrated Independence Day with an appreciation meal for veterans and their families. This year might have been the biggest.

Jerry Nelson, post commander of the Newton American Legion, said the event, also sponsored by Elks Lodge, usually attracts 150 or so people, but this year about 300 people showed up for plates of grilled burgers, brats and hotdogs, along with a bevy of other delicious sides to go along with their summer meal.

"It's been around longer than I have, and I've been down there the last 10 or 12 years. It's actually what got me started in the Legion is helping out with that," Nelson recalled of the free lunch. "It brings folks out after the parade to hang out with veterans and show 'em how much we appreciate them."

About 300 people attended the American Legion Post 111 & Elks Lodge veterans appreciation meal on July 4 in the Newton Post's headquarters.

Nelson was extremely pleased with the turnout of the event, which received plenty of community backing. Elks Lodge donated the brats and hotdogs. Bisom Truck Line and private donors also helped provide resources for the event. Nelson was appreciative of all who attended and volunteered for the meal.

"It's a good time and we'll continue doing this as long as we can do it," Nelson said. "It's just great to have folks come out and spend a good day."
