Veterans Day 2022: Guide to Tompkins County events honoring veterans

A ceremony to honor veterans will be held Friday at DeWitt Park in Ithaca.

The Dewitt Park Veterans Day Ceremony is one of several events scheduled in Tompkins County to commemorate the service of military veterans. It is the first time since 2019 the ceremony will be held.

Organized by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 961 with assistance from Chapter 377 of the Vietnam Veterans of America, the DeWitt Park Veterans Day Ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 11. The featured speaker will be Lieutenant Colonel James E. Tully, U.S. Army - Retired, a Professor of Military Science in the Cornell University Army R.O.T.C. program.

The ceremony will also feature participation by community leaders, as well as the Daughters of the American Revolution, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Cornell University R.O.T.C and Lansing Boy Scout Troop #48.

The following Veterans Day events are also scheduled for upcoming days:

Friday, Nov. 11

  • Dryden American Legion Ceremony including a 21-gun salute and Taps, beginning at 11 a.m. Friday, at the Dryden Village Green, intersection of Main and North streets, Dryden.

  • Groton American Legion Post 800 Ceremony and gun salute at 11 a.m. Friday. Also, Carrington-Fuller Post 800 will host a complimentary roast pork dinner for area veterans and one guest each beginning at 5 p.m. The dinners will be take-out only. Advance reservations will be required. Quantities are limited. Both ceremony and free dinner will be held at at 307 Main St., Groton.

  • Cornell University Various events sponsored by the Cornell Veterans Colleague Network Group and Cornell’s Student Veterans Program will be held on Friday, including a Cornell Chimes Concert beginning at 9 a.m.; continental breakfast buffet at 10:30 a.m., followed by speaker Mark Minton, President of the Cornell Undergraduate Veterans Association at 11 a.m. at Annabel Taylor Hall.

  • Ithaca Tompkins International Airport Dedication of the Military/Veterans Lounge and Vietnam Veterans Memorial plaque, 3:30 p.m., 1 Culligan Drive, Ithaca.

  • Ithaca American Legion Post 221 Chicken BBQ ($12) at 3 p.m., followed by Veterans Day Concert featuring Hustle Souls at 5 p.m.

  • CNY Living History Center Veterans Day Watchfire ceremony starting a 5:30 p.m. at Homeville Museum, 4386 U.S. Rt. 11, Cortland. Drop off retired and tattered flags at the CNY Living History Center prior to Veterans Day.

Saturday, Nov. 12

  • Cornell Veterans Appreciation Football Game, Cornell v Dartmouth, 1 p.m. at Schoellkopf Field; Veterans Appreciation Men's Soccer Game, Berman Field, 4 p.m. at Berman Field. For Veterans Appreciation athletic events, free or reduced-price tickets can be requested from the Cornell Student Veterans Advisor at sva@cornell.edu.

Thursday, Nov. 17

Friday, Nov. 18

  • Korean War Veterans Breakfast All veterans are welcome for Korean War Veterans Breakfast, 8 a.m. - 9:30 a.m, Blue Dolphin Diner, 7670 NY Route 434, Apalachin.
