Veterans Day 2023: Here are the events happening around Montgomery

In honor of the service and sacrifice of those who have served or are continuing to serve in the armed forces, the community has found many ways to celebrate Veterans Day on and around Nov. 11.

Veterans Day Celebration

  • Date: Friday, Nov. 10

  • Time: 10 a.m.

  • Location: Veterans Wellness Center Alabama, 5911 Monticello Drive, Montgomery

  • Info: The Big KD will be there, and they’ll host a cookout for veterans.

Veterans Day Concert Picnic in the Greens

  • Date: Friday, Nov. 10

  • Time: 11 a.m.-noon

  • Location: Huntingdon College in Montgomery

  • Info: The Huntingdon College Band will honor veterans. Bring lunch and have a picnic on the green as the Scarlet and Grey’s Jazz Band, Percussion Ensemble and Concert Band performs. This is a free event.

Montgomery’s Veterans Day Celebration

  • Location: Riverwalk Stadium, 200 Coosa St., Montgomery

  • Info: The city of Montgomery will honor all who served during a special celebration at the home of the Montgomery Biscuits on Saturday, Nov. 11. The celebration is open to the public, and will feature patriotic music, food and more. This is the culmination of a full week of veterans appreciation in the city, and recognizes the importance of Montgomery being home to Maxwell Air Force Base and Gunter Annex.

Every day, we witness the extraordinary leadership our veterans exhibit as they seamlessly transition from their military service to lead on the frontlines of our community. November 11  allows us to unite for a citywide celebration of our veterans and their families."

Veterans Day Wreath Laying Ceremony

  • Date: Saturday, Nov. 11

  • Time: 11 a.m.-noon

  • Location: Autauga County Courthouse, 134 N. Court St., Prattville

  • Info: This is hosted by the American Legion Post 122 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1349.

Discount for veterans at Montgomery Zoo

  • Time: Zoo hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • Location: Montgomery Zoo and Mann Wildlife Learning Museum, 2301 Coliseum Parkway

  • Info: During Veterans Appreciation Week now through Saturday, admission will be half off for all active duty, retired military, and veterans, and their dependent family members. Valid military or veterans identification required. Montgomery Zoo will be open on Saturday.

Veterans Day Hero Workout: CHAD

  • Time: Saturday, Nov. 11, 8 a.m.

  • Location: 2L2Q Fitness, 1550 Jean St., Montgomery

  • Info: It’s a Veterans Day workout in honor of all who served. They will be completing the Hero workout Chad: 1,000 box step-ups as a team. The workout is named in honor of the late Navy Seal Chad Wilkinson. Proceeds support veteran mental health awareness.

Veterans Day Shopping Experience at luluemon

  • Date: Saturday, Nov. 11

  • Time: 9-10 a.m.

  • Location: luluemon, 7060 EastChase Parkway, Montgomery in Shoppes at EastChase

  • Info: To thank veterans and active duty military on Veterans Day, luluemon invites them to a private shopping experience with coffee, treats and a giveaway. Shoppers get 15% off with military ID.

Operation Green Light for Veterans

  • Time: now through Sunday, Nov. 12

  • Info: Several Montgomery County buildings will be lit green. It’s part of a nationwide effort by counties to show support for veterans and raise awareness of resources available at the county, state and federal levels to help veterans and their families. According to Commissioner Isaiah Sankey, the Montgomery County Commission is working to empower the 18,000 veterans who live in the county. The public is invited to participate by using a green light bulb as well.
