Final Civil War gravesite cleaning is Nov. 11

Volunteers will be restoring the final 51 Civil War gravesites at Evergreen Cemetery, 2221 Michigan Ave., on Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

With this effort, all Civil War gravesites that have been identified in the cemetery will have been restored.

Organizers said they will continue a “Meet the Civil War Veteran” concept during the Nov. 11 restoration day. The concept was first introduced during a Sept. 23 restoration day and includes a written biography of each veteran being attached to their gravesite.

The Nov. 11 event will begin with the Pledge of Allegiance at 10 a.m. led by executive members of the Manitowoc County Civil War Roundtable. The restoration project will then commence at around 10:10 a.m.

The Civil War Gravesite Restoration Project at Evergreen Cemetery began in 2021 with 22 volunteers restoring Civil War gravesites. In 2022, more than 75 volunteers were present as efforts continued.

Sept. 23, more than 100 volunteers turned out to help restore more than 100 Civil War gravesites.

Volunteers must register and fill out a City of Manitowoc liability form to participate. Those younger than 18 must have a parent or guardian sign the liability form. Volunteer liability forms will be available at the cemetery Nov. 11. All restoration supplies are furnished, including soap, soft brushes, rags and buckets. Federal rules prohibit any hard or wire brushes or abrasive cleaners. Complimentary snacks and beverages will be provided to volunteers.

For more about the effort, email SaveTheVeteransDan@outlook.com. People can send donations to the effort to Manitowoc County Civil War Roundtable, c/o Daniel A. Reinke, 11902 Robley Road, Manitowoc, WI 54220. The Roundtable is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Library collecting donations for ‘Best Gift Ever Book Drive’

Manitowoc Public Library, 707 Quay St., is running a “Best Gift Ever Book Drive” Nov. 6-Dec. 8.

During that time, people can donate new, unwrapped books by placing them in the donation box near the first-floor service desk at the library.

Monetary donations can also be made by Nov. 27 with checks made payable to “Friends of the Manitowoc Public Library” and “Best Gift Ever” in the notes line.

Funds and donations will be used to give new children’s books to those in need.

Contact the library at 920-686-3010 for more details.

Roncalli to stage ‘Children of Eden’ Nov. 9-12

Roncalli High School will present “Children of Eden” at 7 p.m. Nov. 9-11 and at 2 p.m. Nov. 12 in the Zimmer Auditorium in the Fine Arts Center at Roncalli High School, 2000 Mirro Drive, Manitowoc.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for senior citizens (ages 65 and older) and students (ages 14-18), and $5 for children (ages 5-13). Roncalli High School students are admitted free with ID. The box office will be open one hour prior to performance times.

Historical Society starts winter season

Manitowoc County Historical Society, 924 Pinecrest Road, Manitowoc, has begun its winter season hours, which are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays-Fridays through March 31.

During the winter season, the McAllister House Welcome Center is open and Pinecrest Village grounds are open for site strolls. However, the historic structures are closed during the winter season, except for special events.

The Manitowoc County Historical Society suggests calling ahead to confirm open hours prior to a visit during the winter season as the museum may be closed for maintenance or development.

Winter Site Stroll admission is $5 per person and children younger than 4 are admitted free. General admission is always free for members.

The museum still has several events planned this year, including the “Lost & Found: The Search for USS Lagarto” Hungry for History event Nov. 16; Pinecrest Christmas Dec. 8-9; and “Tis the Season,” a family field trip, Dec. 14.
