Dover

Bryan Bowman, director of Military and Veterans Affairs in the office of Rep. Anthony Gonzalez, will speak about the history of Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 14 in the Dover Public Library community room, 525 N. Walnut St. Bowman will honor veterans as he speaks about the significance of Veterans Day, the cemetery and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Midvale

Midvale will hold a Veterans Day luncheon from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 11 at the park pavilion.

Mineral City

Tuscarawas Valley Local Schools will hold Veterans Day programs at Tuscarawas Valley Primary School at 9 a.m. Nov. 11 in Mineral City and at Tuscarawas Valley Middle School in Zoarville at 9 a.m. Nov. 9.

Newcomerstown

Isleta United Methodist Church, 58608 County Road 9, will hold a patriotic program at 3 p.m. Nov. 6 for the public and especially all veterans. The Isleta Choir will sing the musical “The Spirit of America,” and there will be patriotic readings. The Newcomerstown Veterans Honor Guard will post the colors, and all veterans will be honored. Attendees are asked (but not required) to bring a donation for the Louis Stokes VA Medical Center in Cleveland and the New Philadelphia VA Clinic. Needed items are monetary donations, combs, brushes, disposable razors, gum, hard candy, soap, coloring books, colored pencils, postage stamps, security envelopes, telephone cards, writing tablets and word search/crossword puzzle/Sudoku books. New Philadelphia

New Philadelphia will have a Veterans Day service at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 on Courthouse Square. Tuscarawas County Probate and Juvenile Judge Adam Wilgus will speak.

Wilgus served as an Army artilleryman with the 2nd Battalion, 174th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, Ohio Army National Guard. He is also a member of New Philadelphia VFW Post 1445 Military Honors Team, where he stands with other veterans rendering final honors to fellow veterans.

The New Philadelphia High School Marching Quaker Band, under the direction of Jeff Furbay, will present the national anthem. New Philadelphia Welty Middle School students Caleb Crowthers, Jack Kolat and Jacob MacBath will perform the traditional flag folding ceremony. Students of the New Philadelphia High School Delphian Chorale will perform. The Central Elementary School Choir will sing patriotic songs.

The rifle squad, composed of volunteers from New Philadelphia’s three veterans’ service organizations – American Legion Post 139, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1445 and Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 857 – will fire three rifle volleys. New Philadelphia High School Marching Quaker Band student musicians will perform taps.

The public is invited to the New Philadelphia VFW Post Canteen for the traditional bean soup luncheon following the service. The post is at 441 Park Ave. NW.

Strasburg

Strasburg Elementary School, 140 N. Bodmer Ave., will hold a Veterans Day program at 9 a.m. Nov. 11.

Zoar

National Historic Landmark Historic Zoar Village and Fort Laurens, Ohio’s only Revolutionary War-era fort, will offer free admission to veterans Nov. 11 in recognition of Veterans Day. Hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at both sites.

While veterans’ admission is free at both sites Nov. 11, visitors accompanying them may purchase a combo ticket for both Zoar and Fort Laurens. Admission to both sites is $12 for adults and $6 for youth ages 5 to 17. Admission for children 4 and under is free.

Free admission at recreation areas

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will waive day use fees at its more than 2,850 recreation areas nationwide in observance of Veterans Day, Nov. 11.

The waiver covers fees for boat launch ramps and swimming beaches. The waiver does not apply to camping and camping-related services, or fees for specialized facilities (group picnic shelters) and events. Other agencies that manage recreation areas on USACE lands are encouraged, but not required, to offer the waiver in the areas that they manage.

Visitors are encouraged to contact USACE lake and river projects before visiting to ensure recreation areas are open. The status of USACE-managed campgrounds, boat ramps and swimming beaches and other sites is available at https://corpslakes.erdc.dren.mil/visitors/status.cfm.
