Steven Miller, Monroe County veterans service officer.

Every veteran who has served our nation deserves the support and care they've earned. Filing for VA disability benefits is a vital step in accessing the resources and assistance needed for a fulfilling post-service life. In this guide, I break down the finer points of the VA disability claims process, providing veterans with insights on crafting a well-developed claim.

Understanding the basics of VA disability benefits

1. Eligibility criteria: Before diving into the claims process, it's crucial to ensure you meet the eligibility criteria. Veterans with a service-connected disability that occurred or was aggravated during active duty may qualify for VA disability benefits. For Guard and Reservists, you must have had a condition that started on active duty, active duty for training or inactive duty.

2. Gather essential documents: Start by collecting supporting documents that strengthen your claim. This includes:

  • Service records (DD214): Clearly outlining your periods of active duty.

  • Medical records: Detailing the injuries or illnesses related to your service.

  • Supporting statements: From fellow service members, family or friends who can attest to the impact of your condition.

3. Identify service-connected disabilities: Clearly define the disabilities you believe are connected to your military service. Be specific about how these conditions affect your daily life.

4. Seek medical opinions: Consulting with medical professionals who can provide expert opinions on the connection between your service and your disabilities can significantly strengthen your case.

5. Utilize VA forms: Complete and submit the necessary VA forms, such as the Disability Compensation Claim (VA Form 21-526EZ). This form serves as the foundation of your claim and should be filled out with meticulous detail.  Our office can assist you in completing this form.

6. Provide a personal statement: Include a personal statement detailing the impact of your disabilities on your daily life. Be honest, transparent and thorough in describing the challenges you face.

7. Supporting statements from others: Gather statements from individuals who can attest to the severity of your disabilities and how they affect your ability to work and perform daily activities.

8. Submit a Fully Developed Claim (FDC): Consider submitting an FDC, indicating that all pertinent information and supporting documents are included. This can expedite the claims process.
