Class 2: Strasburg snaps Poquoson title run at four

Poquoson saw its string of Class 2 wrestling state titles snapped at four. But the Islanders, essentially rebuilding this season, did not drop far, finishing second to Strasburg in the state tournament on Saturday at the Salem Civic Center.

Strasburg, which put six wrestlers in the finals — to Poquoson’s four — outdistanced the Islanders for the title 218-150.5 as James River of Buchanan finished third with 138. Strasburg produced three state champions. The highlights for the Islanders were individual championships by seniors Joseph Chiappazzi (152 pounds) and Christopher Barber (182).

Chiappazzi, who finished the season 31-0, won by technical fall over Strasburg’s Donovan Heath. Injured as a sophomore, Chiappazzi lost a close bout in the final as a freshman before losing in sudden-victory overtime a year ago. Barber, who finished third a year ago, beat Josh Wright from Patrick County 7-5 to win his first individual state championship.

Islanders sophomore Ashton Withrow, a 113-pound state champion a year ago, failed to repeat at that weight as he was beaten 2-0 in the final by Strasburg’s Heath Burks. The Islanders’ Ethan Sneddon fell to Glenvar’s Chase Miller in the 170-pound final.

Bruton’s Noah Hodges pinned Daniel Terrones-Lara of Randolph-Henry to win the 285-pound title.
