Viau comeback lifts Eagles past Patriots

Oct. 9—CLINTONVILLE — After injuring his knee over the summer, Peyton Viau wasn't expected to play this season.

Defying the odds, Viau returned to the field and helped lead Beekmantown to a 35-0 victory over AuSable Valley, Friday in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference play.

"There's no better feeling," Viau said. "I love being out here with these boys and I cherish the opportunity. I'm just blessed to be out there."

Viau had a night to remember as he caught four passes for 71 yards and two touchdowns. Both scores came from quarterback Nate Parliament.

The first score he had, Viau felt it was coming to him before the ball was snapped.

"I read how the defense was playing, and I think [Parliament] did too," Viau said. "That just goes back to all the work we've done over the summer. We know each other really well."

While Viau was making his comeback, the Eagle defense came to play, limiting the Patriots to 107 yards of total offense.

"The defense has been playing incredibly well the last couple of games," Beekmantown defensive coordinator Joe Fish said. "They worked hard all week and deserve the shutout. I'm so proud of those guys."

The Eagles on the other hand had a balanced attack that saw 107 yards on the ground and 110 yards in the air.

"We talked this week about how we have to play a cleaner football game," Beekmantown head coach Scott Aguglia said. "The kids rebounded and played great tonight. They went back to work and the hard work paid off."

The Eagles alternated scoring in the first half with both the ground and air attack.

Louis Sweenor scored his two touchdowns from three and six yards which sandwiched the first touchdown catch by Viau.

"He worked hard all summer and then had the accident that hurt his knee," Aguglia said. "Ever since then he's been working hard to get back out there. He showed tonight he's got some football in him.

"He's out there playing and pushing hard. I'm so happy to see that work pay off."

The second half saw more air attack as Parliament and Viau connected for a 36 yard touchdown minutes before Patrick Hagadorn hauled in a 18 yard pass from Parliament.

Beekmantown (3-3, 3-2) hits the road to face Saranac Lake in its final CVAC game to close out conference play, Saturday at 1:30 p.m..

"We're coming for the [sectional] championship," Eagle Lucas Corrado said. "We've got the mindset to get it done. We're taking it one game at a time. The job's not over."

It's a different story for AuSable Valley. The Patriots (1-5, 1-3) remain home as they host the Spartans of Saranac, Friday at 7:30 p.m.
