VERMILLION — Viborg-Hurley's Coral Mason, the 2023 South Dakota Class B Girls Basketball Player of the Year, is joining the University of South Dakota women's basketball team as a walk-on.

The 5-foot-10 guard and Hurley native averaged 18.1 points, 9.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 3.4 steals per game while leading Viborg-Hurley to a 23-3 record and second-straight state Class B championship this winter. The Cougars were coached by her mother Molly.

Mason earned Class B All-State first team honors the last two years from the South Dakota Basketball Coaches Association and also was named the Cornbelt Conference's most valuable player in 2021-2022 and 2022-2023. She earned All-Conference honors three times and scored more than 1,000 points in her high school career.

“We are excited to welcome Coral to our Coyote family!” South Dakota head coach Kayla Karius said in a press release. “She completed a fantastic high school career. Growing up in our great state, she certainly knows the pride of wearing South Dakota on her jersey and will be a great addition to our program.”

Mason’s also a two-time All-Cornbelt Conference pick on the volleyball court, being selected as the conference MVP and honorable mention All-State as a senior last fall.

In Karius' first season as head coach, the USD women went 14-16 overall and 10-8 in the Summit League.

An honor roll student, National Honor Society member and class president, Mason plans to major in business at South Dakota.

Mason's brother Chase is a sophomore quarterback on the South Dakota State University football team.
