Vick Hope has opened up on the heartbreak of losing a friend who was depressed and the phone in on an episode of her radio show that she wishes he'd heard.

Radio DJ Hope hosts the show Life Hacks for BBC Radio 1, where she often shines a light on issues to do with mental health.

In a recent interview with Arcadia magazine, she spoke about one caller who phoned in to the show to talk about living with depression, and how much she wishes her friend she lost to suicide had heard the episode.

Talking about the caller who described finding a way forward after suffering from depression, former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Hope said: "I remember thinking I wish my friend had heard this… I wish he knew there was light coming because maybe he would still be here…

"If anyone listening to this show was feeling the same way and heard this and now knows that there is light coming and they stay, I’m so proud to have been a part of this and I’m proud of them."

The broadcaster, who grew up in Newcastle with an English father and Nigerian mother, said: "We would talk about the struggles, everything from Civil Rights to the Windrush and get to understand the obstacles our older guests had overcome and the obstacles that our younger guests were still overcoming – understand how far we have come and how far we have to go, our roots with a double 'o' and our routes with 'ou'."

Hope, who is said to be planning a wedding in Ibiza with DJ Harris, has also spoken to You magazine about first meeting her fiance years earlier, when she wasn't quite so keen on him.

The pair crossed paths in 2007 when Harris was just starting to become famous, but Hope - who was only 19 at the time - turned him down before getting into a relationship with him much later.

Talking about their first meeting, the former Capital Breakfast star said: "It's something that we laughed about on our first proper date. We still laugh about it now."
