Victims of June plane crash identified by Virginia State Police

Virginia State Police have identified the four occupants of the plane that crashed on June 4 in a remote part of Augusta County.

Jeffrey R. Hefner, 69, of Satellite Beach, Fla. was the pilot. The three passengers, according to VSP, were Adina E. Azarian, 49, of East Hampton, NY; Aria J. Azarian, 2, of East Hampton, NY; and Evadnie Smith, 56, of East Hampton, NY, according to Virginia State Police.

An hours-long search for the crash site and survivors commenced shortly after the plane crashed on Sunday, June 4. Search and emergency crews including Virginia State Police, Augusta County Sheriffs Office combed the difficult terrain in the Saint Marys Wilderness Area as night closed in. After over four hours the crash site was finally reached by the first rescue crew. It was clear from the wreckage that there were likely no survivors.

The privately-owned Cessna aircraft crashed in a densely wooded, remote, mountainous area more than a mile from the Blue Ridge Parkway.  No survivors were located. The remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for examination, autopsy and positive identification.

Virginia State Police said that additional updates related to the cause and nature of the crash would come from the National Transportation Safety Board, which is the lead investigative agency.
