Victorville’s Sixth Street Prep named 2023 National Blue Ribbon School

Victorville’s Sixth Street Prep STREAM school was listed among 33 National Blue Ribbon Schools in California, The U.S. Department of Education announced on Tuesday.

The recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups on assessments.

Under the oversight of the Victor Elementary School District, Sixth Street Prep is led by Principal Angela Bishop Cupp.

“This award results from the hard work, dedication, and collaboration between our staff, students, and families," Cupp said. "I am so incredibly proud of Sixth Street Prep and our community.”

Empowering students

The school's mission statement states that the school will "empower all students to be at or above grade level by building a strong learning foundation, with depth of knowledge and critical thinking skills, in the fundamental areas of reading, mathematics, science, and writing."

“At Sixth Street Prep School, we incorporate many strategies to encourage and challenge students to develop their full potential,” Cupp said. “Without a doubt, the success of SSPS is due to the dedication and devotion of our staff, students, and families. The saying, ‘it takes a village,’ embodies our belief system at Sixth Street Prep School.”

With an estimated enrollment of 226 students, the charter school recently celebrated the 100th anniversary of the school's building in a historic part of downtown Victorville. Victor Grammar School opened in 1922 between Forest Avenue and A Street.

The other California school named a National Blue Ribbon School in San Bernardino County was Rancho Cucamonga’s Terra Vista Elementary School in the Etiwanda Elementary School District.

The 33 California schools were among 353 schools nationally named a 2023 National Blue Ribbon School.
