It’s spring, and that means the Columbia Civitan Club is again taking orders for its annual Vidalia onion sale.

The community group is hosting its annual sale of Vidalia onions as part of an ongoing effort to fund new playground equipment, specifically designed for children with disabilities.

Georgia’s official state vegetable sine 1990, Vidalia onions have a distinctive sweet taste due to the low levels of sulfur in which the onions are grown.

The fresh onions will be brought directly from the farm in Vidalia, Georgia the middle of May

The special vegetable also has a uniquely flat shape and is grown in one of 20 counties located in South Georgia from a yellow granex seed variety that is tested to ensure it meets proper standards set by the Vidalia Onion Committee with approval from the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.

They are being sold for $11 per 10-pound bag by the club.

All proceeds from the sale will be reinvested into the community through the club’s efforts to improve the community.

“We are a community-based club and everything goes back to the community,” said Emily Marshall, a leader of the club.

A member of Civitan International, the organization’s mission is to build good citizenship and provide a means to serve individual and community needs with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities.

With nearly a 70-year legacy in Maury County, the Columbia club was chartered on Dec. 30, 1952, with 28 members and was sponsored by the Nashville Civitan Club.

The onion drive is held in memory of Mt. Pleasant’s Jared Buckner — the inspiration for an inclusive and accessible playground that now stands at Maury County Park.

The funds raised during this month’s sale will support the maintenance and expansion of the playground as will other projects supported by the organization.

Those who would like to order onions are encouraged to, call Hueston Marshall at (931) 381-0922 or Lynn Steinfeldt at (931) 215-8510 by the third week of April.
