Video: Driver tries to race BCSO deputy on Paseo Del Norte

BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – A video making its way around social media shows the moment when an Albuquerque driver tries to race someone on Paseo Del Norte. That driver quickly realized who he was racing, and knew he wasn’t going to win.

Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Connor Otero: “Hey buddy, you trying to race me?

Otero pulled over the driver Friday night after the car sped away from the deputy, apparently trying to get him to race. You can hear the driver from deputy Otero’s lapel footage explain himself, saying the marked patrol unit was in his blind spot.

Driver: “Sorry.”
Deputy: “You’re only sorry cause you raced the wrong dude. I mean, I’m winning that race 10 times out of 10 buddy.”
Driver: “I think you are winning that race every single time.”

He was one of dozens to be pulled over during Bernalillo County’s street racing operation that night. The county says a total of 76 vehicles were stopped, and 36 tickets were issued for speeding or racing on highways.

“It does happen, people make some bad choices,” said Deputy Otero. “Fortunately, this driver made a good choice by pulling over and being able to talk with the deputy and receive citations instead of trying to take off and get some more charged tacked on, on top of what he already had done.”

Another 83 other tickets were issued for other offenses. One driver was arrested and their vehicle was towed.

“There’s a lot of places that these individuals can go out and show off their cars and the speeds that they can go but they need to do it in a safe location,” Deputy Otero added.
