Dale Earnhardt Jr. had a smile on his face as he stood behind a table, shaking hands, signing books and posing for photos.

Fortunate travelers lined up at Charlotte Douglas International Airport restaurant Whisky River on Thursday morning and had a chance to individually meet and greet the NASCAR legend.

Earnhardt, the third-generation NASCAR champion who won 15 consecutive most popular driver awards, relished the chance to connect with the community.

“It’s awesome to be able to come out to the airport and see how things are going,” Earnhardt told The Observer. “They’re always making some upgrades and updates to the airport itself. It’s extremely busy.”

More than a hundred books lined the tables next to Earnhardt, mainly copies of his autobiography “Racing to the Finish: My Story,” and his new children’s book, “Buster Gets Back on Track.” A guitarist performed country music covers in the dimly-lit restaurant, while waitresses passed out hors d’oeuvres and samples.

Earnhardt, who lives in Mooresville, owns Whisky River. From crouching down to pump up young kids, to signing racing hats of passionate fans, all eyes were on Earnhardt, and the NASCAR Hall of Famer appeared happy to share mementos to remember it.
