New video shows debris falling near riders at Downtown Crossing MBTA station

The MBTA released a new video that shows chunks of concrete falling from the ceiling near riders at the Downtown Crossing station on Monday.

T official said on Friday that ceiling debris fell along the wall on the inbound Red Line platform nearly hitting passengers. No one was injured and the area was cordoned off, according to the MBTA.

Work crews were dispatched to the area and performed repair work overnight, including the removal of the debris.

The area was deemed safe early Tuesday morning, and the barriers were removed from the area prior to the start of service, T officials said.

This is the latest incident the MBTA has had to deal with, including the most recent one on Wednesday after a fire broke out along the Orange line tracks between North Station and Back Bay.

In March, a falling insulation tile weighing about 25 pounds nearly struck a passenger at Harvard Station in Cambridge.

Two months later, a heavy utility box hit a Harvard Ph.D. student at the same MBTA station. Officials on the scene estimated that it weighed about 200 pounds in total.

MBTA is set to create a new position, Chief of Stations, to oversee the upkeep of the facilities.

“In addition to implementing strategies that improve communications with riders and addressing rider concerns, this individual will manage a staff of employees responsible for the inspection of stations and develop a process to report any defects or other findings to the appropriate departments for mitigation,” according to T officials.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
