Video shows driver plow into bicyclist in Gwinnett, drive off, cyclists say

A group of Gwinnett County cyclists is sharing video of a hit-and-run driver so that they can track him down.

Channel 2′s Gwinnett County Bureau Chief Matt Johnson was in the Sugar Hill neighborhood, which is a popular area for cyclists in between Peachtree Industrial and Buford Highway.

On Saturday, the horrified cyclists watched as a driver crashed into one of their own and knock him down. Thankfully, the biker wasn’t badly hurt.

On Monday, the cyclists, including Ben Mikcarek, shared video with Johnson that shows the driver plow into one biker at a crosswalk.

“I’ve never seen someone so blatantly trying to hit somebody going down the road,” Milcarek said.

Milcarek said the driver, who was in a Silver Honda Accord, didn’t want to wait as the group passed Woodward Mill Road.

“He probably needed to wait maybe eight to 10 seconds, and we would have been through that intersection and all would have been fine,” Milcarek said. “If he were to turn it a little bit sooner, or if Michael would have been going a little bit faster, I mean, he would have very severely hurt him, if not killed him.”

Milcarek said he and another friend chased after the car, but the driver sped off toward some neighborhoods.

“He obviously knew he’d hit one of the guys, and then he turned right or south on Buford Highway and kept going,” Milcarek said.

Gwinnett County police are now investigating and have a copy of the video.

The cyclists hoping to identify the driver also want to let others know there’s enough room on the road to share.

“That’s just simply not the way to treat people, to try and kill someone just because they’re riding down the road on their bike,” Milcarek said.

In the video, the car moves too fast to catch its license plate, but the group said they’re working on getting the full plate to turn over to the police.
