The claim: Video show Merrick Garland crying after Marjorie Taylor Greene gets a standing ovation

A July 7 Facebook video (direct link, archive link) is a montage that shows Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene at a hearing before switching to clips of a woman talking in a foreign language and a woman drawing a fish.

"Garland CRIES LIKE KID After Taylor Greene Calls Out STUPID 'Trump's Arraignment'... Gets Ovation," reads the caption.

The video was shared more than 400 times in a month.

Our rating: False

The video is miscaptioned. U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland is not shown in the video. No standing ovation is shown. Greene mentions former President Donald Trump's arraignment, but does not refer to it as "stupid."

Garland not shown in video

The first clip shows an exchange between a witness and Greene, a Republican from Georgia, that took place at a June 13 hearing related to the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot. USA TODAY was not able to determine the origin of the second or third clip.

Garland is not shown in any of the three clips.

Fact check: Video shows Rep. Greene at hearing, no mention of Garland impeachment

USA TODAY has debunked numerous social media posts that pair CSPAN or other congressional footage with an inaccurate caption − a type of misinformation called "false framing," Mike Caulfield, a research scientist at the University of Washington’s Center for an Informed Public, previously told USA TODAY.

In a 2020 blog post, Caulfield wrote that false framing is an effective technique for spreading misinformation and recommended that social media users inspect seemingly legitimate content to verify that it matches the claims made about it.
